Step 1: Add the Solution

Extract the contents of the downloaded or purchased zip file.

Add the self-contained WSP package (RedirectURL.wsp or RedirectURL_Trial.wsp) either by STSADM command:

STSADM -o addsolution -filename "PATH\RedirectURL.wsp"

or by using PowerShell:

Add-SPSolution -LiteralPath "PATH\RedirectURL.wsp"

(where PATH is the directory path containing the RedirectURL.wsp file).

Step 2: Deploy and Activate

Visit the Central Administration site and navigate to:

System Settings > Manage Farm Solutions

Click on the “RedirectURL.wsp” or “RedirectURL-Trial.wsp” link, click “Deploy Solution” and then “OK“.

By default Redirect URL is not activated on any of the existing Web Applications.

To activate Redirect URL on a Web Application, navigate to the following location:

Application Management > Manage Web Applications

From here, select the Web Application you wish to use Redirect URL with and click “Manage Features” in the ribbon.

Scroll down to the Redirect URL feature and click “Activate“.

When Redirect URL is activated on a Web Application it creates a SharePoint list titled “Redirect URL” on the root Site Collection. This list is used the manage your redirect URLs. Please refer to the User Guide tab for documentation.

Uninstallation

Redirect URL can be uninstalled by simply retracting the RedirectURL.wsp package from Central Administration.

Visit the Central Administration site and navigate to:

System Settings > Manage Farm Solutions

Click on the “RedirectURL.wsp” or “RedirectURL-Trial.wsp” link, click “Retract Solution” and then “OK“.

Once the solution has been retracted it can also be removed by clicking on the “RedirectURL.wsp” or “RedirectURL-Trial.wsp” link, click “Remove Solution” and then “OK“.

Field Descriptions

Original URL

Enter the original URL (for example, a broken link).

New URL

Here is where you would enter the new URL for the redirect. The value entered here can consist of a full URL to an external site such as “http://wwww.google.com” or you can reference locations within the current site by entering the path to the location starting with a “/“. For example, “/OurPeople/Photos“.

Start Date

This is an optional date and time field which you can use to schedule when a redirect URL is to be in effect. If you specify a date and time here the redirect URL will only work on or after this date and time.

Expiry Date

This is an optional date and time field which you can use to expire a redirect URL. If you specify a date and time here the redirect URL will only work up until that date and time.

Notes

We provide an optional notes field to capture any reminders or details you would like to store for reference regarding the redirect URL.

Owner

Optionally an owner can be assigned to a redirect URL for internal tracking purposes.

Hit Counter

When redirect URLs are used the hit counter field will increase in value to display the number of hits it has received. When creating a new redirect URL the hit counter starts at zero. This value can be changed to start at another number if desired. This is a good way to monitor how frequently the old links are being accessed.
