Road to Awaken 4.0 - Part One - Entry
November 4th, 2007 at 3:59 PM • Posted in Awaken

We’ve been busy with Awaken 4 for quite some time and as we get closer to releasing the Awaken 4.0 Beta we’ll be covering the updates here.

First I’d like to say that Awaken 4.0 is a total re-write coded on Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard - but still compatible with Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger. We won’t be supporting 10.3 Panther since it is so old (over 4 years old) and due to that fact - it prevents us from making Awaken better by taking advantage of the latest technologies.

Awaken 4 will be a FREE update to anyone who purchased Awaken 3 - free updates include both minor and major versions.

So to get back on the road to Awaken 4.0 - I’d like to show you the new alarm editor sheet.

Besides removing the clutter, we have included some new features in this sheet. There is a new alarm type named “Task” which allows Awaken to serve as a reliable file launcher for scheduled tasks.

The iTunes playlist menu has been improved with 3 new features - iTunes folder support, “Current iTunes Selection“, and “Reload Playlists“. With playlist folder support so you can now see your playlists organized in Awaken just as they are in iTunes. “Current iTunes Selection” allows you to have your currently selected or playing track in iTunes to play at alarm time. The “Reload Playlists” option will quickly refresh the playlist listing to display any additional playlists which may have been added to iTunes since Awaken was launched.

First, I’d like to say (and I already claimed it many times) that this is the best alarm application for Mac I ever had the luck to use, especially because of the iTunes integration and the slick design.

I’m also very happy to see Embraceware is offering this update for free.
I love the new menus, the new “LCD” screen (the date fonts are more “Leopardish”) and the date selector makes me think of iCal.

A great update, can’t wait for it to be available for download!

    Thanks J.B.!

  2. Colin Says:

Wow Jerry looking good! Glad to hear the update is free, I have dealt with to many people that take any opportunity to take their customers money. *Cough Cough* David W *Cough Cough* Great job, cant wait for the next installment.

  3. Georgie Says:

    WOW! I can’t wait!! :D

  4. monkeyjams Says:

Looks great, Jerry! Looking forward to hearing more and the ultimate beta release.

  5. Britonius Says:

Looks good, straightforward and clean. I can’t wait to see what else you have in store.

I’m still hoping to see a full screen clock option (just a clock - no window or extras on the screen) with customizable background and font color, so I can have my alarm clock big with black background and Maroon or Red font. Also I want to be able to set it so I can hit any key to either Snooze or Stop the clock, my choosing.

    Cool !
If only we could use time machine to fast forward there… ;)

  7. Shane P Says:

Looking forward to watching it develop, It’s come in handy many times!

  8. Nick Says:

Look’s really good. I didn’t have any complaints with version 3’s alarm editor sheet, but after seeing your new one, you were able to make it even more clean and simple. I’ve never seen an independent developer this dedicated to an app. Everyone I’ve shown Awaken to ends up buying it :)

  9. dave Says:

looks good, im at uni and dont have a DAB radio, would be great if you could import the bbc radio widget thingy into this, to wake me up

  10. werbeagentur Says:

    really cool! nice feature!

  11. Brian Says:

Please release soon, Jerry, I’m dying for this update! :D

Any idea how soon Part 2 and/or the beta will be released? (As you can tell, I’m fairly anxious ;) )

Keep up the great work, can’t wait for 4.0!

  12. Carl Says:

    Hello from Germany!

Bought Awaken years ago, was always happy EXCEPT that it does not use an attached iPod.

PLEASE include in this version. THANKS. Carl

  13. PETER Says:

great work! have been on the TRIAL mode for a while and finally bought it today;) great program! love to wake up to my music! and the TASK part is really smart!

  14. PETER Says:

by the way - why not build in a part in WAKE UP - so the machine is forced to startup (from cold start, not only sleep mode?!) must be possible to make that - its already in the system pref…like the idea?!

  15. Jerry Brace Says:

@Peter - continue reading the blog posts - this entry is just part 1. We’re up to part 8 now. Along the way we mention the new power on startup option and a whole lot more :)

  16. Ross Says:

I can only think of two features that I would like. The first, the option to run it from the menu bar instead of the dock. Second, I use Front Row when I go to bed, so maybe an option to close Front Row before the alarm goes off so I don’t get both songs playing at once? Thanks

  17. Jerry Brace Says:

@Ross - both of your requests have been included in Awaken 4. Be sure to check out the other blog posts. This is just part one of nine at the moment.

    Thanks for the feedback!
