ps. can’t wait for Awaken 4.0!! Any clues about new features?..

Okay, that is without a doubt one of the coolest things I have ever seen. Hands down. My son walks around the house receiveing streamed Blue’s Clues to my iPhone…when he gets bored, he starts to flip through photos or play songs.
More impressive, I guess, if you realize he’s three and a half.
Awesome.

It appears this works for the iTunes music folder as well. While this may not be very useful on a local network, it could be very useful for remote users who have large music libraries and can’t sync all of their music to the iPhone. Simple, but very useful idea. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for this great tip, but can you tell me how, after you ripped your DVD’s, you got them to iTunes?

Stoked for Awaken. Thought I’d mention that though this method will work for getting a list of your flicks on your iphone, you’ll unfortunately be unable to watch any of them unless they are under 20 megs (the Safari threshold for streaming mp4) Wish there was a workaround for this.

Great technique. I used something similar

The timing is funny–just this week I built something similar. Rather than using Apache’s built-in ‘directory index’ feature (which doesn’t work to well on the iPhone’s tiny screen) I made one with PHP.
Check it out!

Along with downloadable code, that page has a link to a demo. (Which isn’t perfect because the server the demo is running on doesn’t alphabetize things.) Plus mine has pretty buttons on the main screen.

Yup, I’ve been doing this with Lighttpd for some time, it’s quite nifty.

SPMP,
To get DVDs into iTunes you need to convert them to H264 (Best) or MP4. The best way to do it, at the moment, is using a programme called Handbrake. It does take some time to convert, especially if you have an older Mac.

GMTA — I thought of this too! I gave it a shot a few weeks ago, mostly just to see if it would work, and it works beautifully. I did have some problems with my modified Apache server, but they were quicly resolved. It’s pretty cool to be able to sit in another room and watch something on the iPhone, with the Mac in the office streaming away. I do think I’d cry if I tried this over EDGE remotely, though.
For those who’ve tried this, is it just me or does QuickTime/Apache seem really smart when streaming? When watching long movies, I can actually scrub far past what’s already streamed (indicated by the fill in the timeline control in the iPhone video player), and after a brief pause, the video starts playing at that location. It seems that it skips what it hasn’t yet streamed, and starts sending mid-movie. I really only thought QuickTime Streaming Server would do this — I’m just running a pretty stock iMac with 10.4.10.

Looking forward to 4.0. Could you share any details about upcoming changes? It’s been quite some time since your July 27th post announcing a forthcoming 3.1.5 launch w/the new site design.

FileNice helps tremendously, as does iExpress (an unfinished php-driven web app over at iLounge.com).
You also don’t have to host using port 80, looking into the apache conf file will expose the default Apache port for editing.
All these methods are nice and efficient when you combine them with automatically downloaded podcasts and image folders.
What we really need is an editable version of iPhone Remote’s directory listing or one that ties into the iTunes and iPhoto databases.
Someone drop a line to Nullriver, they’ve got the infrastructure in place with their Connect360 app.

Hi, thanks a lot for this great tip. I don’t know if I’m too stupid, but whenever I try to access the Movies’ alias, the Apache gives me a 403 - Forbidden.
I have web sharing and file sharing enabled - can anybody help me with that?
Thanks a lot and have a great day

ok - sorry for the double posting - solved it myself - you gotta chmod the music directory the right way…..

Hey Jerry — Just checking in and wondering if I’m the only one who is regularly popping over to this blog. It’s been quite some time since any kind of news (the last being a preview of an updated website in July and then an announcement of Awaken 4.0 a month ago). Anything to report?
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:51 pm
Yeah I am heere pretty regularly. Just subscribed to the feed to save me some time. Any updates Jerry? I am anxiously awaiting. (Maybe he is just timing his release with Leopard?!)

Livia, what did you chmod to because I also have the same error message and can’t get past it.
November 9th, 2007 at 12:03 pm
@Alex: You have to “sudo chmod 755 ~/Music”

I’m not very familiar with terminal, but I think I should be able to do this comand with the knowledge I have. My system is in Portuguese and I’ve changed the Machintosh hd’s name. I have tried with the exact names of my file directory and I get messages on terminal saying invalid comands or file directory. Please help! Thanks…

Why was this post removed?! I was hoping to find a nifty way to use my touch more effectively. I hope someone has the same information somewhere else, because this is just disappointing.
