Update: Based on the response in the comments and email thus far we have decided to put this idea on hold. Let us know what you think in the comments - thanks!
Awaken has included a menubar extra (AwakenHelper.app) for awhile now. When enabled you can close Awaken and it handles openning Awaken for you at alarm time. It also provides quick access to see the next alarm time. I wanted to let you know that we are working on adding more functionality to that menubar extra to make it more useful. We’re going to enhance it by allowing it to serve as an iTunes controller which can you use at anytime with a single click. Here is a before/after shot of this idea:

looking good jerry, keep it up

I think your corssing a dangerous line here. There are plenty of apps that serve this purpose better, you should focus more on improving the alarm functions.

A jackknife is a better knife than a swiss army knife. Keep it simple.

I’m with the nay-sayers .. please concentrate on Alarm functionality .. ther’s plenty of apps that do something similar already .. this functionality should not part part of an alarm clock app.

it seems very nice and still simple
I sure like the “next alarm”.
the blue background and subtle effect on the cover are pretty.
you should refrain to add more feature here. just be really basic and focused on “alarm”.

Yeah, the functionality is nice to have, it looks fancy, but I agree that there are many programs out there for free that do the same thing, likely better (well, with more functionality…) I guess if you’re aiming to make Awaken a well rounded, full featured All-in-one iTunes ‘extension’, this may be a good feature to add, but I can’t see it bringing in more users, or adding more value to the program.
I do love Awaken though.

“A jackknife is a better knife than a swiss army knife. Keep it simple.”
Agreed.
Please don’t stray too far from the alarm function. What I would love is less memory usage, not more features.

Looks nice, but it’s hasn’t anything to do with Awaken.
I like the menubar how it is, i dont need anything fancy

Wow - thanks guys. I’m really liking this feedback. As always your feedback is always important and it’s great to hear what you think. The image in the blog post was just a Photoshop mockup to get your feedback. I’ll hold off on the idea based on the response

I think its a brilliant Idea.
@ Piotr Banasik and Dylan
Please link me to this Third Part App. You speak of that supposedly controls Awaken from the Menu Bar? I was not aware that Third Party programmers where helping in the development?

That was Sarcasm btw.

If you ask me, and probably everyone else here, the idea is wonderful, and could be great, but none of us want it in our “Alarm Clock” Awaken App. We want a wonderful (it already is btw) OS X Alarm Clock, not an all in one app.
If you ask me, you guys are obviously wonderful developers, so why not release a seperate app for iTunes Control? It is a crowded market, but as I said earlier, I’m sure you have the skill, so that’d be my advice. I, for one, would buy it!
Again, good work on Awaken 3.1!

Don’t do it, Jerry!

I don’t really like that idea either, there are enough iTunes Controls out there, I don’t need it in my Alarm-Clock. But if you are about to change the Menubar Menu, there are some things I’d like to see: I use the sleep timer and egg timers quite often. It would be nice to activate them from the menubar. Perhaps even some feature like saving pre defined sleep- and egg-timers? just a suggestion …

@Mephux
The idea Jerry proposed does not add any Awaken controlling functionality, it is an iTunes controller. Try Menuet, CoverSutra, Synergy, etc. Or simply right-cllicking on the iTunes icon in the dock. They all serve the same purpose and since that is their main focus they can do it better, with more features.
I agree completely with Dustin.
